Quick Answer
They're not really competitors — they solve different problems. PicoSure is a picosecond laser that targets pigment and tattoo ink (plus some surface texture). Potenza is RF microneedling that rebuilds collagen for acne scars, pores, texture and skin tightening. If your concern is colour (spots, ink), think PicoSure. If it's texture or firmness, think Potenza. Many people end up using both.
"PicoSure or Potenza?" is one of the most common questions we get — and it's a bit like asking "screwdriver or hammer?" Both are excellent; they're just built for different jobs. Here's how to tell which one your skin actually needs.
Match Your Concern to the Right Treatment
| Your concern | Better option |
|---|---|
| Tattoo removal | PicoSure |
| Dark spots / pigmentation / sun damage | PicoSure |
| Acne scars (pitted/rolling) | Potenza (texture) — or both |
| Post-acne dark marks (flat) | PicoSure (colour) |
| Large pores | Potenza |
| Overall texture / "glass skin" | Potenza + PicoSure |
| Skin tightening / mild laxity | Potenza |
| Fine lines | Potenza |
| Puffiness / jaw tension | Face Up Buccal Massage |
How They Actually Work (the Real Difference)
PicoSure is light. A picosecond laser fires ultra-short pulses that shatter pigment and ink particles with a pressure wave, so your body can clear them. It's selective for colour — which is exactly why it removes tattoos and clears brown spots, and why it does nothing for "loose skin." Its Focus Lens Array adds some collagen stimulation for texture as a bonus.
Potenza is energy plus needles. Fine needles deliver radiofrequency heat into the deeper dermis, triggering new collagen and elastin. That's what firms mild laxity, lifts pitted scars and refines pores — structural work that light alone can't do. It has no effect on tattoo ink or flat pigment.
For Acne Scars — It Depends on the Scar
This is the one concern where the answer is genuinely "it depends," so it's worth slowing down. Pitted, rolling and boxcar scars are a texture problem — depressions that need collagen rebuilt underneath, which is Potenza's strength. Flat brown or red post-acne marks are a colour problem (PIH/erythema), where PicoSure's pigment targeting helps more. Plenty of people have both, and a staged plan using each for what it does best gives the best result. We go deeper in our guide on RF microneedling for acne scars, and you can start from our acne scar treatment overview.
Can You Do Both?
Yes — and many of our clients do, just not on the same day. A typical sequence pairs PicoSure for pigment with Potenza for texture and firmness, spaced out so your skin recovers between treatments. Combining them thoughtfully often beats hammering one concern with a single device. The right order and spacing is what your assessment is for.
A Note on Safety
Both are technique-sensitive, energy-based treatments. With RF microneedling in particular, the U.S. FDA issued a 2025 safety communication noting that improper use can cause burns, scarring and other complications — so trained hands and conservative, customized settings matter far more than the brand of machine. We start every plan with a skin assessment and tailor settings to your skin tone and concern. More on our Potenza page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is PicoSure or Potenza better for acne scars?
It depends on the scar type. For pitted, rolling or boxcar scars where you need to rebuild collagen and lift the depression, Potenza RF microneedling is usually the stronger choice. For flat, dark post-acne marks (PIH) where the problem is colour rather than texture, PicoSure laser targets the pigment. Many people benefit from both in sequence.
Which is better for skin tightening?
Potenza. Its radiofrequency energy heats the deeper dermis to stimulate collagen and firm mild laxity — that's what RF microneedling is built for. PicoSure works on pigment and surface texture, not deep tightening.
Which is better for pigmentation and tattoos?
PicoSure. As a picosecond laser it's designed to shatter pigment and tattoo ink, which microneedling can't do. For sun spots, age spots and tattoo removal, PicoSure is the clear choice.
Can I combine PicoSure and Potenza?
Yes — they're complementary. A common plan is PicoSure for pigment and Potenza for texture and firmness, spaced on separate days. Your assessment determines the right order and spacing.
