Results vary between individuals. This is not registered massage therapy or a medical treatment, and it does not change bone.

Body Concern

First, What Is the Hump Made Of?

A bump at the base of the neck, where the neck meets the upper back, gets called a lot of names: dowager's hump, buffalo hump, neck hump, tech neck. They are not the same thing, and only some of them respond to hands-on work. Before we touch anything, we look at what yours is actually made of, at a free assessment at our Yonge & Steeles clinic.

  • Postural and fascial hump — the most common kind. Years of forward-head posture (phones, desks, driving) load the muscles at the top of the spine. The tissue over the seventh vertebra thickens, the upper trapezius and levator shorten, and fluid pools. This is a soft-tissue problem and the one we work on.
  • Fat pad ("buffalo hump") — a deposit of fat over the same area. It can come with weight gain, long-term steroid use or a hormonal condition such as Cushing's. Massage reduces surrounding puffiness but does not remove fat; if we suspect this, we will tell you.
  • Bony curvature (kyphosis) — the spine itself has curved, often with age or osteoporosis. This is a structural problem. No massage changes bone, and this belongs with your physician or a physiotherapist.

Most people who come in have the first kind, sometimes with a little of the second. That is who this page is for.

What Actually Helps Each Kind

What the hump isWhat we do hereWhat we do not claim
Postural / fascial (tight, thick, puffy)Hands-on release of the upper trapezius, levator and the fascia over C7, lymphatic drainage, posture and mobility homeworkThat one session makes it disappear for good
Fat padDrainage of the puffiness around it; honest referral if it looks hormonal or medication-relatedFat removal. That is a physician's conversation
Bony curvatureReferral to your doctor or a physiotherapistAny change to the spine

The hands-on work is the same discipline behind our FaceUp Method: slow, deep release of shortened muscle and thickened fascia, followed by drainage so the fluid that has been sitting there has somewhere to go. On the neck we add mobility work for the upper back, because if the posture that built the hump does not change, the hump comes back.

Before & after

What one session can change.

Before and after one hands-on neck hump session: the bump at the base of the neck is visibly smaller in profile
Before (left) and after (right) a single hands-on session at the clinic. The immediate change is mostly released tension and drained fluid, and part of it is temporary. A lasting result needs a series and the posture homework. Individual results vary.

What to expect

Your Neck Hump Session

  1. 01

    Assessment (free, about 20 minutes)

We look at the hump in profile, feel the tissue, check how your neck and upper back move, and ask about pain, medications and how quickly it appeared. If it is not a soft-tissue hump, we say so here and you pay nothing.

  2. 02

    Release

Slow, deep hands-on work on the upper trapezius, levator scapulae and the thickened fascia over the base of the neck. It is firm, not painful; you can ask for less pressure at any point.

  3. 03

    Drainage

Lymphatic drainage from the base of the skull down through the neck and shoulders, so the fluid that has pooled over the hump can clear. This is where most of the same-day visible change comes from.

  4. 04

    Mobility and homework

A few minutes of upper-back and neck mobility, then two or three exercises to do daily at home. This is the part that decides whether the result lasts.

Safety

When to See a Doctor First

A good fit

  • A soft, thickened or puffy bump at the base of the neck that built up gradually
  • Desk, phone or driving posture with a forward head
  • Tight, achy upper trapezius and shoulders
  • You want a non-invasive, hands-on approach and are willing to do the homework
  • You have already been checked by a doctor and told it is postural

See your physician before booking

  • The hump appeared quickly or is growing fast
  • Pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or hands
  • Diagnosed osteoporosis, spinal fracture or kyphosis
  • Long-term steroid use, or signs of a hormonal condition (round face, easy bruising, unexplained weight gain)
  • Active infection, skin lesion or recent surgery in the area
  • Blood-clotting disorders or anticoagulant therapy (disclose at the assessment)
Honest Expectations

This programme is performed by Natalia, our founder with more than ten years in the clinic. It is not registered massage therapy, physiotherapy or a medical treatment, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition. It reduces the appearance of a soft-tissue hump; it cannot straighten a spine or remove a fat deposit. If that is what you have, we would rather tell you at a free assessment than sell you a series.

Questions

Before you book.

Can massage get rid of a neck hump?

It depends on what the hump is made of. If it is mostly tight, thickened soft tissue and fluid from forward-head posture, hands-on release, lymphatic drainage and posture work can visibly reduce it over a series of sessions. If it is a true bony curvature (kyphosis), a fat deposit from medication or a hormonal condition, massage will not remove it — we will say so at your free assessment and suggest you see a physician.

How many sessions does neck hump reduction take?

Most people see a visible change after the first session, mainly from reduced fluid and released tension, and that change is partly temporary. A meaningful, lasting improvement usually takes a series of 4–8 sessions combined with the posture and mobility homework we give you. Results vary from person to person.

Is this a medical treatment for dowager's hump?

No. This is a hands-on soft-tissue and posture programme performed by Natalia, not registered massage therapy, physiotherapy or a medical treatment. It does not change bone. If your hump appeared quickly, is painful, comes with numbness or weakness, or you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or a hormonal condition, please see your doctor first.

How much does neck hump reduction cost in Markham?

The programme is quoted at your free assessment, because the number of sessions depends on what is causing the hump and how your tissue responds in the first session. The assessment is free and takes about 20 minutes. Prices are in Canadian dollars.
